Makeup. It can be daunting!
Maybe you don’t know where to begin your makeup collection. Or maybe you have so much it’s time to minimize! Either way, I’ll show you my top 5 essentials that I use on a daily basis and love.
There is SO much on the market and every product seems to claim that you absolutely need it. I used to linger in drugstores looking at tons of makeup and somehow convince myself that I really needed that blush (even though I had seven others at home). Not too long ago I realized that I was consistently investing in things that just kept getting pushed into the back of my makeup drawer. It didn’t seem like a big deal for a $6 eyeshadow, but it really did start adding up. I didn’t like over half of my makeup collected and hardly any of it was being used. It was time for a change.
I was starting the process (and it is a process) of switching to a more minimalistic lifestyle, and makeup was a great place for me to start. Now, I do not think there is anything wrong with loving makeup and investing in it! I have just learned that it should be exactly that- an investment. It should be something you truly love and are going to use almost every day! For me, I find it so much less stressful with less. And since I’m not buying cheap makeup consistently anymore, I have that money to use towards higher quality and more natural products.
I still use drugstore products and I definitely don’t use all natural products yet- but I am slowly using up my makeup to transition to a more natural lifestyle. And in the meantime I am working on minimizing and loving what I have!
People frequently pose the question “If you could only have one makeup item for the rest of your life..blah blah.” While I think that is a silly question, my answer would definitely be concealer! If I have a blemish or redness I feel like none of my other makeup is going to look good.
Being honest, I’m not much of a heavy foundation lover. I think the best makeup looks are when you can actually see your skin! When I do use a foundation it is generally sheer, a tinted moisturizer, or a mineral foundation. I’d estimate that most ladies actually like 80% of their skin, so why cover it all up?? Investing in a GOOD concealer is a must for me.
My all time favorite is the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. It takes the smallest amount on a concealer brush to cover even the meanest of pimples, dark circles or redness. Also, the color selection for this concealer is amazing- I h i g h l y recommend getting professionally color matched. It makes all of the difference when your concealer matches perfectly For a great under eye/brightening concealer I love the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer. I haven’t looked into many natural concealers, so if you have a good recommendation, let me know in the comments!
Powder is necessary whether you have extremely oily skin, or very dry skin. If you don’t want your makeup sliding everywhere, you need a good powder to set it with. My favorite way to do this is with just a tad of the Bare Minerals original foundation. It gives me a little bit more coverage and a beautiful finish- not too matte, not too glowy. If you are looking for something very sheer that will set your makeup with no extra coverage the Bare Minerals Mineral Veil is awesome, or a drugstore option is the Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder.
Now that your base is looking great, you’ll definitely want to add some color back into your skin with a blush. For the winter I really love a glowy blush, and Milani has some beautiful baked blushes! I love Milani baked blush in Rose D’oro. It’s a gorgeous natural, glowy color that I wear every single day.
4.) Eyelash curler
There have been many occasions where I have forgotten my eyelash curler on a trip and been absolutely devastated. That’s how much I love it. It seriously makes such a huge difference. It makes my eyes look so much larger and more open. Eyelash curlers definitely improve the more expensive they are, so I recommend investing in a good one!
Of course, how can I talk about essentials without mascara. It is kind of the “gateway item” for a lot of women into the makeup world. On most school days I will curl my lashes, put on a good couple coats of mascara, and be done with my eyes! You will be amazed at what a difference a good mascara makes. There are some drugstore mascaras out there that are good, but my holy grail mascara is the Tarte Lights Camera Lashes Mascara. It is seriously amazing. It separates your lashes, but also makes them look super thick. One of the best parts of this mascara is that it is has very natural ingredients, especially in comparison to drug store mascaras. I know it seems scary to invest in mascara when you can just pick up a $7 one from the drugstore, but I promise it’s worth it!
I use all 5 of those essentials everyday, and they make my makeup routine quick and easy. I’d love to hear what your favorite makeup essentials are!
